"What does 'Rockroach' mean?"
Back in 1981, I drew a cartoon of a little guitar-playing bug that coincidentally bore an uncanny resemblance to my friend and lead guitarist, Tim Campbell.  I felt the little bug should be named after some sort of an insect and, since he was playing an electric guitar, I felt the word 'rock' should appear somewhere in the name.  With the grasshopper in mind, I quickly came up with the name, 'Grassrocker'.  Being the conscientious and responsible individual that I am, I just as quickly discarded that name as I didn't want the 'moral police' to harrass me saying the 'grass' thing was a drug reference.  I proceeded to look for another name and, thinking of the cockroach, in a flash of inspiration I came up with the name, 'Rockroach'.  In a flash of aggravation I quickly realized that 'morals police' would be really annoyed with the term, 'roach'.  I don't do drugs ... I never have.  I decided the 'morals police' need to get a hobby and I named the little creature a 'Rockroach'.

"Don't you have to be born with the ability to play by ear?
"
Absolutely not.  Playing by ear is a far more natural method than sight reading. We learn to sing by ear as children long before we can even read.  As long as a person has the musical ability to recognize a 'good note' and a 'bad note', they can develop the ability to play music by ear.  Motivation is the most important factor in developing the ability to play by ear.

"So are half-hour guitar lessons a waste of time and money?"
Not necessarily. A lot depends on the teacher and a lot depends on the student. People learn in different ways and some need the commitment of attending a regular half-hour lesson just to maintain their discipline. However, some people's schedules make it difficult for them to commit to a weekly half-hour lesson.  In some cases, I recommend for my seminar participants to follow up with some half-hour lessons.

"Do you still perform concerts?"
I stopped touring when my kids were born. I still did an occasional concert but I wanted to be there as my kids were growing up.  It was a good decision because I have two incredible children. My kids are now in the twilight of their teens and I'm preparing to get back to travelling and performing again.  For more information, click on the BIMZONE button and look around the site.
